Sam McNulty’s Speakeasy takes you back to Prohibition: After Dark

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Eliot Ness won’t be busting down the doors of Speakeasy. (Well, yeah, the Untouchable is long dead, like the Prohibition era.)
But the just-opened Speakeasy does recreate a bit of the flavor of illegal drinking spots of the 1920s.

It’s located in a dimly lighted basement below McNulty’s Bier Markt, 1948 West 25th St., Cleveland. It doesn’t have a sign. And owner Sam McNulty isn’t really telling people about it.

But there it was on Saturday, Aug. 8, packed with sippers of old-style and out-there cocktails.

“I’ve always thought that going out for a cocktail is a great way to escape the mundane realities of life,” says McNulty. “And I was thinking: What was the ultimate escape? The speakeasy during Prohibition.”

The concept started brewing in McNulty’s head last year, 75 years after the repeal of Prohibition, which banned the sale of alcohol for consumption.

“It turned the country on its head and affected the drinking habits of a lot of people, like my family,” says McNulty. “You know, I’m Irish.”

Just because he’s Irish doesn’t mean McNulty is content with Irish pubs. He also owns the Belgium-beer-themed Bier Markt and the adjacent pizza-and-wine spot Bar Cento.

With Speakeasy, he used vintage chandeliers and wood to make the bar feel like something from another time.

“The bar is made out of an Amish barn from the 1800s,” says McNulty. “And we came up with a totally different cocktail menu.”

No doubt. The Pimm’s Zingiber made my lips pucker in a new way. I didn’t try the Manhattan Pig, but it sure sounds different.

“It’s bourbon and vermouth infused with bacon,” he says. “I got the idea from reading about old speakeasies, where they’d infuse alcohol with different flavors.”

In the 1920s, the alcohol was so rough-and-tumble, they had to do that to mask the flavor. McNulty promises that Speakeasy’s alcohol is top-shelf.

“People used to distill their own gin in the back,” he says. “It’s still illegal to do that — and the last thing we’d want is to get busted. Our Speakeasy is legit.”
